Standard Dartboard Elevation & Oche Throwing Altitude

A commonly asked question is what peak and distance to the oche should a dartboard be? The detail below covers the Standard (steel tip) Dartboard or in some quarters called the London Board. The set up-up can vary for other Regional dartboards i.e. the Yorkshire Dartboard, the Fives Dartboard, and the smaller Manchester Dartboard. These dartboards can take either dissimilar lath height or oche throwing distances. With Soft-tip Standard Dartboard the recognised throwing distance is 8' (2.43m) not 7' 9 ¼" (2.37m) as shown beneath. See regional dartboard section.

The measurement is nevertheless shown in metric and not-metric (regal Feet and Inches). The modern set-upward uses the metric equivalent to the imperial measurements. You tin download the dartboard setup from this folio for both the standard abled body height and the disabled wheelchair height which was agreed past the World Darts Federation in 2022

Soft-tip Dartboard setup details are also shown here, nevertheless, I have not included a diagram.

Dartboard Set-up Measurements

Hockey / Oche Mat - copyright Darts01.comThis website contains both metric and purple measurements to set-up the standard 'clock' or 'London' dartboard. Those of y'all with a swell centre will know that the five'viii" is in fact 172.72cm not 173cm as illustrated so what should the height be?

The height since the formalisation of both height and throwing distance should be as evidence 173cm height and 237cm length. The imperial measure for the height was rounded upwardly by 0.28cm a very slight change however other regional dartboard meridian is still referred to in the older imperial measurement only you volition see I have too added the metric equivalent.

Wheelchair users should set the board height at 137cm. More details regarding wheelchair darts and disability darts can exist seen below and on a dedicated disability darts page on this website,

Imperial measurements are all the same used on most dart barrels and shaft threads 2BA and the older large brass not commonly seen these days 4BA

Top

v' 8" (one.73m) from the flooring to the eye of the bullseye.

Throwing / Toe line or Oche

7' 9 ¼" (ii.37m) from the board to the throw line or 9' 7 ½" (two.93m) when measured diagonally from the bullseye to the throwing line). This second mensurate is used when playing on an uneven surface.

Throwing Lane

Minimum 2' (0.6m) clearance both sides of the board (remember darts are sharp!).

Mounting

The board should be mounted flush to the wall not leaning forwards with D20 directly at the top.

Soft-tip Dartboards

The common oche length used when playing on a Soft-tip lath is 8' (2.43m) non vii' 9 ¼" (2.37m). Run across your local league for any variation. The height of the board is the same equally a standard dartboard.

Ladies Throwing Distance!

A commonly asked question is what distance should ladies throw from?

BDO World Championship ladies throwing distance is the same as the men's, seven' 9 ¼" (2.37m). Just many leagues effectually the U.k. have different throwing distances for ladies. The well-nigh mutual distances other than  7' 9 ¼", is 7' half-dozen" & 7' 0". Other distances for men include 8' 0" & 8' 6" but this is now uncommon.

Other Dartboard Set up-ups

Why is the Hockey / Oche and dartboard height such an issue?

Scholars of the sport may have read at that place have been, and still are, many variations of the dartboard. The common dartboard we see on TV and probably play-on in pubs and clubs is known as the standard London clock dartboard only it hasn't always been that way.

For this reason, confusion set up in on what the setup for a dartboard should be, above is the Official set-upward for the standard lath merely what about others?

Throwing distances and heights have varied over the years and today different leagues still apply a different measurement. I have listed below the standard measurements used. However, I am sure others will say we play from x distance different from what I have stated. I know some ladies leagues do employ shorter throwing distances merely this is non true for official competition i.e. WDF, BDO competitions.

The standard dartboard setup is used by the WDF, BDO, PDC and other official bodies. As for the others, I have checked with the regions, to confirm the setups for each.

The figures hither are rounded to the nearest CM and 1/4". Modern setups apply metric measurements notwithstanding I accept shown both for reference.

Dartboard A: Height to Centre Bull B: Centre Bull to Oche C:Throw Distance
Standard 5' eight" / 1.73m 9' vii ½" / 2.93m seven' ix ¼" / 2.37m
Standard (Wheelchair User) iv' 6" / ane.37m 9' 0"   / two.74m 7' 9 ¼" / ii.37m
Soft-tip five' 8" / one.73m 9' ix ¾" / 2.99m 8' 0"  / 2.44m
London Fives (Narrow Fives)* five' half dozen" / 1.68m ten' six" / 3.20m ix' 0" / 2.743m
Ipswich Fives (Wide Fives) TBC** 5' 8" / i.73m 9' vii ½" / ii.93m seven' 9 ¼" / 2.37m
Manchester v' 3" / ane.60m 9' 2"  / 2.79m 7' 6"  / 2.29m
Manchester*** five' half-dozen" / 1.68m 9' 3 one/5"/ ii.84m 7' six" / 2.29m
Yorkshire 5' 6" / i.68m 9' 0" / ii.74m vii' 2" / 2.18m
Lincolnshire (fifteen" dia Dartboard) 5' viii" / 173 cm ix' 0" / 274 cm 7' 0" / 213.4 cm

The higher up is the official board heights and accepted throwing altitude, however, some leagues may vary and so please cheque your local league setup and rules. Equally stated the measurement conversion are rounded from the royal to metric.

Over the years the regional variation on 'Hockey' or 'Oche' length has ever been an issue with players moving from one Canton to another. Throwing distances have been anything from vi'- ix', most common 7', vii'two", 7'6", 8' and nine' So why is the official length 7' 9 ¼" 2.37m?

The Yorkshire Dartboard: Some may disagree with the set-upwards I have listed above and this may be due to changes seemly adopted in parts of Yorkshire but non necessarily all. The information I have gathered from Yorkshire and Professional person Dart players confirm this set up-up, however, I am enlightened that some set the Yorkshire board upward equally per a standard clock board.

* The East End Fives or Narrow Fives shown hither are taken from the East London Darts League show the post-obit dartboard set-up details.

The Board should hang deeply from a wall and then that the elevation of the middle bull is 5ft 6ins from the flooring.

The throwing distances can vary from anything from 9ft face up of the board measured horizontally. This equates 10ft 6ins when measuring from the Centre Bullseye to the rear of the Oche.

** The Ipswich or Wide Fives set-up is shown as the standard setup, however, I am waiting for confirmation every bit this may well modify to the same equally the London Five Dartboard.

The Lincolnshire Dartboard (15" dia dartboard) setup details are supplied by the Lincoln and District darts league.

My thanks to John Lowe, Yorkshire Darts and Lincoln District Darts Leagues for the information they have provided.

Wheelchair Dartboard Set up-up

In 2010 Russ Strobel submitted to the Darts Australia a new recommended dartboard pinnacle for Wheelchair users. The peak Russ has come upwardly with is 137cm to the centre Bull. The height was based on the perceived origins of the standard hanging height of the standard clock dartboard. It is said the average height of a human in the England UK was 5'8" around 1920's, the summit to the centre bullseye of a standard lath. Modern adjustments brand that 173cm. Russ has taken this analogy and worked out what the height would be should a man of five'viii" (173cm) exist sitting in a wheelchair. His exact figure came out to exist 136.5cm nevertheless as Russ explains the addition of 0.5cm would make the recommended wheelchair dartboard height like shooting fish in a barrel to recall 137cm (wheelchair) - 173cm (Standard). I agree with yous Russ we all like things easy to recollect.

This new height for wheelchair users was recognised by the WDF on October 8th 2022. The first World Inability 'Winmau' Masters took place in 2022. Read more nearly Disability Darts
